If Humility is in My Hands, Greatness is in God's Hands.
Philippians 2:5–8 (ESV) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
That Christ chose humility as the way to live on this Earth is an understatement. He went as far low as you could get, "even death on a cross." He who was the author and originator of all things made Himself no-thing.
Paul says, we must do the same.
Humility is our job. Keeping ourselves seeking to serve and give ourselves for the sake of others to the glory of God is our calling in Christ. It's not for us to seek to be first. Jesus said do not assume the best seats and the places of honor. Seek rather the lowest place and let others honor you as they see fit.
This sounds scary. It sounds scary because we don't like to be doormats.
But Jesus was not a doormat. He was firm and He was strong. He drove out those selling doves and such. Pharisees sought him out. Nicodemus knew He had God's power. Roman Centurions recognized His authority. He was a man of incredible standing.
Perhaps this was why He was so willing to go to the cross. He knew who He was.
If you are seeking greatness to define you, watch out, because when it's gone, your identity will be gone with it.
Christ knew He was the Son. He knew His Father was STILL His Father. Nothing people said or did for or to Him changed that.
That's the key to obedience and humility. Not having to prove yourself because you know WHO you belong to.
The result:
Philippians 2:9–11 (ESV) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
When we know our job is humility, God takes care of everything else. Not that we seek humility to be great eventually, but the scriptures do teach, that is what comes....
James 4:10 (ESV) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
God is in the exalting business. He doesn't want you wallowing beneath people's feet. He simply wants you well aware of where you belong. Before Him.
PRAYER:
Father, help me to know my identity in Christ. Help me to live and operate from the glory of being yours before anything else. I love knowing YOU. It is a privilege to be found as your Son.
