Weren't We Just Here?
Another chapter, the same story.
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way." And the disciples said to him, "Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?" Matthew 15:32-33
Literally one chapter later, Jesus is again moved with compassion for the crowds who follow him and are hungry.
Yet again the disciples are oblivious to what Jesus is able to do for them and through them. However, instead of focusing on their lack of resources, they are focused on the setting. "Where can we get enough bread in a DESOLATE place?"
Sometimes that's how we are. Focused on the setting of our lives. The desolate places. I've been there. Desolate in relationships, desolate in feeling God's presence, desolate in financial situations where bills are paid and little else.
Its not about where you are, its about who you are with.
Jesus never fails in the desolate place.
Jesus knew these people had followed Him there. He knew they were all in with Him. And he cared for them. When we follow Him through desolate places we can be sure He will come through for us. The only necessary requirement is to be WITH HIM. To listen to His Word, to spend time IN HIS PRESENCE.
This is what Jesus does - He fills us up. Every time.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. Matthew 15:37
How often I realize that calling out to Him, praying to Him and leaning in to hear Him fills my life with good things. How often I neglect the source of living water....
PRAYER:
Father, I want to be with Jesus. I want to abide in Him. Give me a desire first for Him. Deepen my hunger for Christ and Christ alone - the living water and bread from heaven. May I sense your presence and power. In Jesus' Name.
