When Jesus Got Popular He Went Private

I think of how many of us seek the approval of people.  It is a real and powerful temptation.  All of us in some way are affected by it.  We measure our worth by how many people want to be around us.  We can't help it.  We need it.

And then the enemy twists it and uses it against us.  Making us slaves to the opinions of people.  He tempts us to fear what they think instead of what God thinks.  It can be so hard as a Pastor to fight this temptation.  You want to make an impact on a large number of people.  But then the number gets large and you are tempted to play a game of "keep the crowd."

I'm so glad Jesus gave us a better example to follow.  And every leader, every preacher, ever person who follows Him should pay attention in Luke 5.

After a miraculous catch of fish for Peter, a healing takes place in a leprous man.  Here's what happens next:

Luke 5:15–16 (ESV) But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

Jesus soars in popularity.  Healing lepers will do that for you.  But notice, when the great crowds came to hear Him, when LOTS of people began to adore Him and seek to be around Him... He withdrew to desolate places and prayed.

Jesus knew His connection to the Father was the source of strength and power.  Jesus knew the crowds could be fickle and picky.  They would be for Him very soon.  Jesus made it a point never to get his value or worth on the popularity of the people.  There was only one relationship that made Jesus be Jesus... the Father and the Holy Spirit.

What an example for us!  Withdraw to places where no one sees and pray.  When your stock starts to rise and people start to accumulate and you feel the lure of attention and acclaim... go get with your Father.  Otherwise, you'll be caught in a trap of keeping the fluctuating opinions of the masses happy and you'll lose your soul.

Spend time in the presence of your Creator.  Let Him create in you a steadfast spirit.

PRAYER:
Father, I want your approval... not that of people.  Help me to do what is right, what is good, what is according to your will whether or not they like it.  You are the only one I need.  Thank you for loving me.  Forgive me for allowing myself to be a slave of opinions... I ask for personal strength to stand up and be what you want.  At all times.  In Jesus' Mighty Name!
