The Wisdom of Actions instead of Instructions

It has been said of many exuberant Evangelical Christians: "I can't hear what you're saying because your actions are speaking much louder."

Faith apart from works is a major theme for James 2.

James opens chapter three with a personal plea: "Don't go trying to be teachers. Most of you shouldn't be.  Because our tongues are the hardest parts of our bodies to control."

Evidently James is addressing a certain condition of the church.  This "I want to be up front and important" theme of aspiring teachers who really couldn't toe the line in daily life.  We see their attitude addressed in verse 14: James 3:14 (ESV) But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

We still see this idol of importance in the church today.  People want to look significant.  They want to be in front of a crowd dispensing wisdom, they seek their value in guiding others through words of eloquence.

But James gives us a different view:
1. Teaching is tough. (We make most of our mistakes with our mouths, so those who teach will be most culpable on the day of judgment.)  Love the MESSAGE here: "Teachers are held to the strictest standards. And none of us is perfectly qualified. We get it wrong nearly every time we open our mouths."
2. No one can fix the problem of our tongue.  It is a restless evil.
3. Being in front of people doesn't make you important or significant.  It makes you accountable.

Notice how James shifts gears in verse 13:

James 3:13 (ESV) Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

You want to look important?  You want to look understanding and knowledgeable?  Here's how you do it - do something good for others.  You don't need a pulpit or a position to be considered wise and understanding.  You don't need a title.  All you need is an eye to see what others may need and meet it for them.  Anyone can do it!  No special education or certificate required.

I'm a teacher and I agree with James completely.  Teaching is tough.  And I wish I could say I'm getting better with taming my tongue but it's a daily constant battle.  My advice to anyone reading: Don't seek importance by the number of people you can impress from a distance.  Look for opportunities to impact people up close.  Find a place where you can serve others in your life and do it.  That's being the Salt of the Earth and Light of the World.

PRAYER:
Father, I want my faith to be reflected better in the unseen moments of my life.  I want to treat the ones closest to me the best!  I want to honor and love my wife and children.  I pray for your help.  Holy Spirit, come flood me with the love of God for those closest to me.  In Jesus' Name Amen.
