His Discomfort, Our Rest

Matthew 26:45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Sleep and take your rest later on.  See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

I find it interesting that Jesus is concerned for the rest "later on" here. He's about to experience the worst suffering imaginable.  He could have been fed up with these guys to the uttermost.  Instead, He's going to the cross with their "rest" on His mind.  Spiritual, emotional, and physical rest is what Jesus came to give.

I never saw this before, but the second time he found them sleeping he didn't even wake them.  Wow.  He was on the verge of utter loss and they were catching some z's.  The one who commanded that we forgive 70 times 7 lived up to His own standard and more.  While His closest associates were letting Him down, He was letting them sleep, waking them up when needed gently, lovingly.  Like a Father over his children.

That's Jesus.  Never forget it.  Never doubt it.  He isn't going to be harsh with you.  You will make mistakes, you will sin, you will let Him down.  He will forgive.  He came to make that possible.  He came to bear our sins.

When you see it that way, sin loses its flavor.  When you focus on God's love, the allure of lust and desire for the things of this world grow strangely dim.  Rest in Him.  Abide.  Stay.  He's done it all.

PRAYER:
Father, you sent your Son for my rest.  Spiritual, emotional, physical.  I rest in your love and grace.  I thank you for your care and concern for me.  I'm humbled by the grace I have in Jesus.
