Hearing - JOHN START
John 1:1–5 (ESV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
I love what N.T. Wright says about this Gospel. He talks about how grand it is compared to the Synoptics. How John wants to make sure you're going to get a wide-angle lens shot at the life and being of Jesus.
No manger, no census, no magi, no shepherd. One statement every Jew would have immediately recognized. "In the beginning."
Wright says, "This book is about the creator God acting in a new way within his much-loved creation." Again and again we are reminded how God works in His world. His activity is through the spoken word. He communicates creation in the heavens and earth and now at last He communicates life through His son.
Hebrews 1:1–2 (ESV) Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
The question is, are we listening? Are we open to what God wants to say? When God speaks, things happen, order comes about, life flourishes and human beings find their peace and contentment in the presence of almighty God.
Psalm 33:6 (ESV) By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
The new work of Jesus begins a new Creation in the human heart. Hear his words and receive Him.
And the end of the chapter is equally eye-popping...
John 1:51 (ESV) “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
It's important to understand the process... hearing leads to seeing. You don't see first. You listen. You let God do the talking. Instead of coming with your preconceptions of who Jesus is, let His Words into your heart and watch Him open your eyes.
PRAYER:
Father, may I have ears to hear and eyes to see Jesus. I open my heart to Him in this Gospel. I ask that You will let me see Jesus as never before. In His Name, Amen.
