You Can't Get Away With Sin
No matter who you are... there's no escaping the trap of sin. If there's one common theme throughout scripture other than the GOSPEL which saves us from sin... it is that sin, though starting small, eventually gives birth to death.
Psalm 7:14–16 (NLT) The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. 15 They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. 16 The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads.
We are warned repeatedly in scripture of the almost human-like hunter nature of sin and it's ultimate catch-up effect on our lives.
James 1:13–15 (ESV) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Isaiah 33:11 (ESV) You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.
Job 15:35 (ESV) They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.”
Numbers 32:23 (ESV) be sure your sin will find you out.
Botice the common theme when it comes to sin. It is conceived. And conception always happens in a womb. This means two things. Sin starts small, and sin starts secretly. If not dealt with, sin grows, develops, becomes strong, then is a stronghold, goes on the hunt (Numbers 32:23) and ultimately overpowers the one who gave it birth!
We should be alerted by these anthropological overtones when it comes to sin. Sin is something that LIVES in us, and it must be killed, destroyed and annihilated.
The good news is that you can abort sin! Jesus is stronger than our sin. He is the man free from sin and so can break its power!
For believers, another answer is confession. James, who gives us the recipe for sin also gives us the remedy for sin. He says later in the 5th chapter... James 5:16 (ESV) Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
You have to expose it, it must be confessed and unearthed from the womb of secrecy. This is why God gives you a Church family where you can do what James says right here. Jesus sets you free individually yes, but sometimes He only brings true deliverance to habitual sin in community. Why? Because we are made for each other. We are made to grow together as the body of Christ.
What is it that is small and growing secretly in your life? Perhaps an abortive procedure with a grace-filled Christian brother/sister is the answer before you find yourself outmatched by something you created for yourself.
