No Familiarity Breeding Contempt

Psalm 15 (ESV) A PSALM OF DAVID.
O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

This Psalm was most likely sung by David after Uzzah was slain by the Lord for stretching his hand out to steady the Ark. David was upset and the Ark went to dwell in the house of a man named Obed Edom. David is awestruck by the holiness of God and so he determines the holiness required for someone to go up to the holy place of God.

It is the proper approach toward God. We must be awestruck by His holiness.
Hebrews 12:14 (ESV) Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

To be saved by grace is no excuse to disrespect God's house and flippantly act as if coming to Him is cheap and easy. We must understand the magnitude of Christ's work by acknowledging the complete holiness of God.

David established the place where God's temple would be. He even furnished the money and goods necessary for Solomon to build it. Yet he did not hold the place of God's dwelling in contempt. He did not let his familiarity with God make him flippant toward God. This was a man after God's heart, who knew His holiness and long for His glory.

Today we must do the same. In our effort to make the Gospel accessible, we cannot make it less than astounding and wonderful. Our God is holy and perfect and altogether righteous. His Son has given us access before Him. Let us stand in awe and appreciation. And let us seek to live up to what we have already attained by faith!
