God's Cave, God's Timing
Psalm 57 was sung by David in the Cave while he hid from the deadly pursuit of Saul's jealous rage. That is very important to understand when you read the first line:
Psalm 57:1 (ESV) Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.
David was stuck, alone, in a dark dreary cave. But his firm confidence in God is so strong he sees the cave as the "shadow" of the Lord's wings "till the storms... pass by." I don't know if you like where you right now. Perhaps you're sitting in a cave. Perhaps you had dreams that seem to have never come to pass and instead of "arriving" you've been barely surviving. Life can be like that some times.
What do you do in God's cave?
Complain?
Pray?
Groan?
That's what many do.
David sings and he considers this dark damp cave the loving hand of God who knows not only WHERE His servant is, but WHEN he needs to be there and for how long he should be there.
I think about how David was ordained to be King in front of his brothers at age 17. Shortly later he was in the king's court. Surely he must of thought he was on the fast track to the throne. But no. Sixteen more years until the Kingdom would finally be in his hands. How long have you been waiting for that calling of God to be realized? How long have you been hanging in the cave and running from Saul?
Verse 2 is just as good as Verse 1:
Psalm 57:2 (ESV) I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me.
David understands, this is not "David's" purpose... it is God's purpose for him. David is certain God's plan will prevail over his life. It sounds like the familiar phrase in Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
Then the last verse of the Psalm:
Psalm 57:11 (ESV) Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
Psalm 57:1 (ESV) Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.

His desire is for the glory of God to be revealed over all the Earth. He is not looking for his name to be known. David walks in what Luther termed: "the theology of the cross." That if God can get glory from my life even though I pass through some caves, so be it. I am the clay, He is the potter.
You may feel like you're in a cave but God has you in His hand...
For such a time...
