Love Misdirected
2 Timothy 3:1–5 (ESV) But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Four of the 19 qualities Paul lists concerning the difficult times of the last days contain the word "Love." I've never seen it before, but looking at our world today, this totally makes sense.
Today it is no longer "God is love." Today people live as though "Love is God." Love will make everything better, love will solve your loneliness, love will never make you feel bad about something you do, love is something you cannot help and cannot control... ie. you can't help who you love. Love is about what I can get from someone to make me feel good about myself.
It is LOVE misdirected.
"Lovers of self.... of money... not loving good, loving pleasure, not loving God." The word for "not loving good" in Greek is one word, it can be translated, "without interest in the public good." That opens it up for us! It's talking about a person who doesn't care about the general good of people, but is solely concerned with what good is in this for me? So then, notice, love misdirected is loved aimed at me. What makes me feel good, live better, and have more.
And Paul's warning to Timothy - avoid them.
Wow.
A Pastor's time is valuable. Jesus said, "Do not give what is sacred to dogs." That is good advice. In a day in which we are connected to so many people though social media and blogs and forums where anyone behind a computer keyboard can boldly and oftentimes rudely pronounce judgment on someone or something, we are susceptible to the "Facebook" or "Twitter" debate. We forget the Lord's command and Paul's advice to Timothy.
Watch your time and attention. Who are you paying too much attention to? Are they simply living for their own purpose and pleasure? Don't give them an ounce. They aren't worth it, they aren't your mission. Look for the people who God is speaking to in life and minister to them. They are there.
We just can't see them through the narcissistic crowd sometimes.
PRAYER:
Father, help me see who you see. Help me have an eye for the ones you are are speaking to today. I want to listen to Jesus and Paul. I want to give my attention to the ones you want me to. Help me know the difference. In Jesus' name.
