God Will Always Get You What You Need
1 Chronicles 12:1 (ESV) Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.
There are four noteworthy gatherings to David in this chapter. The first is in the darkest time of David's exile from Saul - in Ziklag and basically under house arrest as he seeks asylum from the king's threats. Yet God brings mighty men to David even when David cannot do much in himself. What is most shocking is where this group descends from:
1 Chronicles 12:2 (ESV) They were bowmen and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the left hand; they were Benjaminites, Saul’s kinsmen.
Amazingly, these were Benjaminites, the very tribe from which Saul hails. How incredible to see the familial bond break for David in this scenario. Consider that David must have wondered if anything positive would happen for him at this point. But God brings him the men he needs in the time he needs it.
Later in the text another gathering occurs:
1 Chronicles 12:8 (ESV) From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains:
The text further identifies the great warriors these Gadites were:
1 Chronicles 12:14–15 (ESV) These Gadites were officers of the army; the least was a match for a hundred men and the greatest for a thousand. 15 These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
You get the feeling these men were the cherished warriors of Israel. And God brings these men to David's side while he's in the dark days of his exile.
There is a particular person the text points out. His name is Amasai. He is from the tribe of Benjamin. David fearing they would betray him asks them to state their explicit purpose at the outset of their gathering. It is then the text stipulates:
1 Chronicles 12:18 (ESV) Then the Spirit clothed Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said, “We are yours, O David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! For your God helps you.” Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
Amasai does not simply vow loyalty to David. He is filled with the Spirit to declare why they are joining David? Because God helps him. The text is instructive. It shows us the ways the Spirit leads the right people to David during his low points.
Sometimes we think the enemy is going to win in our world. He's not. God is bringing the right people into the army at just the right time to deliver the kingdom to Jesus. I've been through great seasons where it seemed so many were with us and I've been through lean seasons where we were just getting through. But God was always ready to give us what we needed to see His purposes prevail.
David's calling was sure, and God's anointing was upon him. Just because he didn't have the throne yet didn't mean he didn't have the people. God doesn't operate with impressive titles or positions. He operates by the power of the Spirit. The Spirit brings people into the Church to fight in the supernatural realm. The victory is certain and the throne is inevitable.
May we embrace even dark times knowing that God is working to prepares us for the brighter days ahead.
Amen.
