So Good
God is good.
We say it, we may even respond, "All the time." But why is He good?
Psalm 145 is David's last Psalm in the collection. A lifetime of learning from God has led him to one ultimate conclusion: God is good.
He is a sinner's savior:
Psalm 145:8–9 (NLT) The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. 9 The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.
How often we rely on God's slowness to anger. We often get discouraged when we don't see wicked people judged in the time we'd like. But His compassion toward us is a constant reminder that we should be thankful He's gracious for a lot longer than we deserve.
He is a promise keeper:
Psalm 145:13 (NLT) For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. The Lord always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does.
God is faithful to bring to completion the work he started in you. You have nothing to fear about His plans for you. In everything, He is working for your good. Those are promises to rest on when you feel lost or off track, beaten down or discouraged.
He's a burden lifter:
Psalm 145:14 (NLT) The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads.
He doesn't burden us, He lifts them for us! Jesus said, "Take my yoke,... for my burden is light... and you will find rest..."
He's a need meeter:
Psalm 145:15-16 (NLT) When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing. 15 The eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they need it.
He gives us food and clothing and even more than we need.
He's altogether righteous AND kind at the same time:
Psalm 145:17 (NLT) The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness.
His righteousness is scary... but His kindness makes Him approachable and leads us to repentance (see Romans 2:4).
He's a friend who is always closer:
Psalm 145:18 (NLT) The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.
James tells us to draw near to Him and He will draw near to us. That's a promise. Stop and seek Him, find Him and know His perfect peaceful presence THROUGH the TRUTH that is Christ.
He's a prayer answerer:
Psalm 145:19 (NLT) He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them.
How many prayers have you noted to be answered? Keep a record, it will astound you how often He answers you.
He's a protective Father:
Psalm 145:20 (NLT) The Lord protects all those who love him, but he destroys the wicked.
I have seen my life miss so many dangers because of the gracious hand of God upon me. It has been such a blessing. And for that I am severely grateful.
What could you add to this list in your life? There can be no shortage of adjectives to describe the goodness of our God.
