Life Built Together with the Lord
Psalm 127:1–5 (ESV) Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
When I first read this Psalm I thought it was two different Psalms that have been forced into one. The first part is about building something - industry, work, labor. The second about family, children and rest (which often don't go together).
But I was wrong. I learned that Jewish people see this Psalm as a unit because in their mind all areas of life flow together and affect each other. Why do we build and create industry? For our families benefit of course. Why do we rise up and do what we need to do? So that our family can be whole and healthy.
But the main point of this Psalm is - you shouldn't partake in either endeavor without the Lord! Your work and your home are only built strong on His counsel, truth and grace.
Many of us are living in an extreme deprivation of the Lord in one of those areas. Either we are full on with the Lord at work or at home, but having both is the key. The Lord brings balance, harmony and peace to both!
The Lord is also concerned with both our industry and family.
How many Christians compartmentalize their job from their home claiming that spiritual stuff is for the family but the job is the job.
No! Says the Psalmist. We must do all our endeavors in the power and provision of the Lord. Build your house with him. Do your industry with Him. Remember that apart from Him you can do NOTHING meaningful and build nothing lasting! That goes for work and family.
Let's build our lives completely with the Lord.
