Big God Small Fears

Tonight is a State of the Union address from one of the most secular Presidents in US history. Honestly, I didn't watch. I don't have to. I know what it will be... more promises, more aggrandizing, more posturing for a better results in the midterm elections due this fall.

But no matter what happens in Washington DC. God has the same response.

Laughter.

One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 2. It's a Royal Psalm, written about David, the King of Israel. The Lord has established his anointed King. Who can stand against him?

Well, that was before Jesus. And today we understand Jesus is the Lord's anointed King who shall never lose His throne. But the enthronement of Jesus is not the disappearance of those who rebel.

Psalm 2:1–3 (ESV) Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”

The World's system has an inherent enmity with God. Most especially with Jesus. The idea of "god" can be manipulated according to our values. Human beings historically project their values onto whatever "god" fits their own imaginations. But Jesus is different. You can't just define Jesus according to your idea. We have a record of His standard and sayings. He's a clear representation of who He is and who God is. Jesus makes you take a side.

So the world bunkers down thinking they can cast of the bonds of the Lord's rule.

And every four years, Christians with small faith freak out and get upset or feel like the world has new hope. Please understand two realities the day after every Presidential election. No matter who wins:
1. Some people have placed too much faith in a man.
2. The other people have placed to little faith in God.

What does God do when the world rises in defiance? He giggles.

Psalm 2:4 (ESV) He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.

Some people say God doesn't have a sense of humor. He does. He gets a kick out of people thinking they can subvert His authority and power.

There is no such possibility. All shall bow the knee before Him.

And I gladly do every day.
